Traditional Skills Day and Public Market at the Village, July 27 from 10 to 2

On Saturday, July 27, from 10 am to 5 pm, Traditional Skills Day returns to the Gaspesian British Heritage Village.  New this year is the addition of a public market organized in partnership with the Town of New Richmond and CEDEC Small Business Support Network (SBSN).   Many vendors will be on site including organic vegetable growers, jewellery makers and wine producers.

The theme for the day “Participate, Discover, Learn” invites you to watch demonstrations of a range of traditional skills, including blacksmithing, beekeeping, weaving, woodcarving, quilting and felting as well as trying your hand at activities such as pottery, butter-making and embroidery.  Perhaps you may even discover a skill that could launch your entrepreneurial wings!

As usual at the Village, the air will be filled with the tantalizing scent of fresh, homemade bread - is there anything better than a slice of warm bread with butter, especially when it has been made by the Village’s own Gladys Burton?

New this year is the barrel-maker, or cooper. Watch the fascinating processes involved as he produces traditional wooden barrels using skills rarely seen today.

Visit the market and see, taste, and experience some of the products that come from Gaspesian entrepreneurs!

The tearoom will offer homemade meals and snacks and the horses and wagon will travel all day to the far end of the site, where there is plenty of space for those wishing to picnic.

There is no entry fee for this special event so come along, bring your friends and family and have fun the traditional way!  This initiative is supported by the Société d'aide au Developpement des Collectivites Baie-des-Chaleurs(SADC), le ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ)Baie-des-Chaleurs Active et en santé and the Chambre de Commerce BDC.
